Description

Lee & Pearl Pattern 1964: Darling Doris 1960s Ladies' Suit for 18 Inch Dolls is our homage to sunny, sparkling '60s star Doris Day — and to all the stylish career gals of the era.

Unlike many other bubbly blonde stars, Doris rarely played a debutante or socialite. She was far more likely to put on a ladylike pastel suit and strike out as a professional woman — a magazine editor, ad exec, interior decorator or research scientist. The sky's the limit for any doll wearing our Darling Doris suit!

Inspired by a vintage Vogue pattern from 1964, our THREE PIECE SUIT is chock full of high-fashion details. But this is a Lee & Pearl™ pattern, so don't worry — we will walk you step-by-step through every detail, with photo illustrated directions and guaranteed-to-fit-together, computer-drafted pattern pieces that make even couture construction as easy as possible.

FITTED TOP

Our refined little blouse features front princess seams that extend into cap sleeves, with a matching curved yoke in back. The high jewel neckline is ideal for pairing with period-appropriate chokers and pearl necklaces. The sleeve, neckline and back openings are neatly faced inside, and the back closes with snaps and ladylike button trim.

The extended shoulder line and feminine curve of the side seams make this top flattering on our dolls, who — let's face it — don't have much of a waist on their own. The flare over the hips also allows this top to float gracefully over the waistbands of skirts, shorts and even bulky denim jeans.

KNEE LENGTH PENCIL SKIRT

This slender, knee-length pencil skirt shares the famous "no crack back" fitted waistband and easy, flat-until-the-very-last-step construction of our Pattern 1041: Slim Skirts pencil and denim skirt variations. But the slightly higher, natural waistline on this skirt gives it a vintage look — and a closed kick pleat in back adds some cute "walking away" flare, while maintaining the demure, period-accurate look of the ensemble.

FULLY LINED SWING JACKET

Finally, here's the pièce de résistance: a hip length, boxy swing jacket — the very height of early 60s fashion!

We think this is a particularly elegant version of the style as the curved front seams, back yoke and graceful shawl collar make a pleasing counterpoint to the square-cut boxiness. We've even designed the top of the collar to be ever-so-slightly larger than the underside for a smooth, couture-quality roll.

This jacket is fully faced and lined, with a just-like-the-real-thing ease pleat at the center back of the lining. The sleeves are cut in one with the front and back side pieces, and lozenge-shaped underarm gussets allow for a smooth, comfortable fit.

The bracelet-length sleeves are a nice, early '60s touch. And we LOVE real, working pockets, so of course we had to add in-seam pockets to the front of the jacket — a detail that wasn't even included in the Vogue original.

The FITTED TOP is rated INTERMEDIATE. The PENCIL SKIRT is rated EASY. And the SWING JACKET is rated INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED.

The difficulty level of the jacket depends on the fabric you choose. Unless you want a truly advanced experience, stick with fabrics that can be marked clearly and DO NOT RAVEL easily.

The right tools are important for couture level work. Along with good pins, sharp scissors and chalk rollers, chalk pencils or erasable markers, we highly recommend that you own a good steam iron and pressing assistants with a variety of gentle curves — such as a tailor's ham, seam roll or at least a small sleeve board.

Please be aware that 18 inch dolls can vary significantly in their measurements. These patterns were developed to fit Mattel-era American Girl® dolls with the following approximate measurements, and will fit differently on dolls with different measurements: chest — 11"; waist — 10.5"; and hips — 12"

Starting in December 2018, that's Lee & Pearl Pattern 1038: The Gift Bow Front Dress for 18 Inch, 16 Inch and 14 1/2 Inch Dolls.

While scouting the fashion pages and runway reports for inspiration, our pattern designer was struck by one of the prettiest trends we’ve seen in a long time. You’ve probably noticed it too — all those soft ruffles and gathers, interesting pleats and seams, bows and motifs formed out of the fabric of the dress itself. It’s an organic kind of ornamentation, that allows over-the-top frills while still retaining the elegant restraint of a vintage couture gown.

Our Bow Front Dress explores this lovely trend with pleated raglan sleeves, a draped front panel and inverted center front pleats that mimic the look of a tied ribbon bow. Best of all, we designed this dress to be made from a single quarter yard or fat quarter of ordinary woven fabric — a dress designed around the use of pretty fabrics should allow you to use a wide variety of pretty fabrics!

Made very well. It fits very nicely. The strap over the nose, helps the mask not slip.
