Description

Beautiful sterling silver Clan Montgomery brooch in great vintage condition. The motto is "Garde Bien" in Norman French, translated: "Guard Well". The brooch depicts a female holding an anchor in her right hand and a head in her left. All Scottish Clan crests are surrounded by a belt as only the chief of the Clan is entitled to wear the symbol of the clan by itself. In ancient times, when he returned home, he would hang the symbol on the wall along with his belt, which eventually evolved to include the motto of the Clan written upon the belt. In this form it may be worn by all of the Clan's members.

Stamped on the reverse 'SCOTLAND', and 'T.E' for the maker, the T K Ebbutt Ltd Company of Edinburgh. The three smaller stamps are surrounded by the shape of a shield, and depict the thistle, the castle and the letter 'u' in lower case, denoting manufacture in Scotland, Edinburgh, and in the year 1950. The T K Ebbutt Company was established in 1896 by Thomas Kerr Ebbutt, who passed in 1921. The company continued on until 1977, when it was bought by Hamilton & Inches, who updated the registration in the year 2000.

Brooch is medium sized, at 1.2" high and 1.0" across, and is made with the solid weight of quality! Beautiful gift for any Montgomery.

Arrives protected in a sturdy package.
