Description

Vintage Norwegian Silver Solje Brooch.
Marked Sterling H in a circle Norway
Excellent condition.
Clasp: "C" catch simple style.

This is a beautiful, traditional, Norwegian, Solje, "Bunad" Brooch. It was created by Scandinavian jewellery maker, Ivar T. Holt of Oslo, Norway, (most known for his enamel on silver pieces). This brooch is signed. The circled H signifying Ivar T Holt.

The Solje pieces were meant to represent the sun, and were worn on the collars and cuffs of the brunds, normally as brooches or pins.

According to Norwegian folklore, a child wearing silver was protected from harm, so these small brooches were often given as Christening gifts. Folklore even states that the metal content in the Solje piece was meant to "ward off trolls."
