Each snake in this pair of light earrings is completely unique. The snakes have been individually forged out of Sterling silver and decorated with a pattern punch. The handmade earwire has a hook to stop the earrings from falling off.

The Story

These little snakes are inspired by ancient snake rings and pendants found almost everywhere since the bronze age.

Snake jewellery has been historically used as charms of protection from the very thing they depict. Like many of their historic counterparts, these snakes have been forged to shape, not cast. Each snake is thus different from another and has its own character.

The decoration is based on stamp work used extensively in decorating Viking silver jewellery. I make all my own punches, so the stamp work will be unique to me. The punch decoration represents the diamond pattern on the back of an European common adder.

Silver

We use solid Sterling silver, 925, on all of our silver jewellery. Sterling silver is slow to patinate naturally to a dark grey. On most items we deliberately patinate the silver in order to highlight the decoration or the design.

To keep the silver shiny, polish it with a silver cloth, such as the one provided. Gently rub the cloth onto the silver. The cloth will not remove the patina.

This piece has been individually hand forged to shape, not cast. As testimony to the ancient method the hammer marks have been left on the surface of the pendant. The surface has not been polished to the mirror finish you see on most silver jewellery.

Hallmarking information

All items, over a certain weight, made out of precious metals, that are sold in the UK have to be hallmarked. This is why these earrings have a set of tiny stamps. The stamps tell you quality of the silver, who is the sponsor or maker, where the item was assayed and which year. The hallmark is your guarantee that the silver is Sterling and at the same time it is my signature. The hallmark is discreetly placed on the underside of the snake.
