Description

This elaborate piece of hoop art is a detailed portrait of artist Frida Kahlo, as inspired by Kahlo’s 1943 painting “Thinking About Death.” I drew the image free-hand (it is not traced), and painstakingly hand-embroidered Frida’s face on soft brown Ultrasuede. In the center of her forehead is an embroidered circle showing a placid landscape with a skull bead in the center (Expert Hayden Herrera describes this detail in the painting as a "circular window opened in her forehead" p. 167). Her hair is done up in a wrap-around braid. She is wearing a blouse of embroidered sari fabric, to which I've added sequins and decorative beadwork. The background is a tropical forest with sequined and embroidered leaves and braided, twisting, embroidered vines. I filled in the rest of the background with forest green satin stitch. I had a lot of fun thinking of creative ways to mimic the beauty and detail of this portrait. The sequin-work is borrowed from the tradition perfected by Haitian folk artists.

According to Hayden Herrera, “Frida's confrontation with death [in this portrait] is almost Egyptian in its imperturbability; indeed, her portrait recalls the famous bust of Nefertiti, of whom she said, 'I imagine that besides having been extraordinarily beautiful, she must have been "a wild one" and a most intelligent collaborator to her husband.'” (Herrera 167).

The wooden embroidery hoop is a 7" circle (not including the frame which adds about 1/4 inch). It will make a compelling, funky, and fun wall hanging or can be propped up on a stand. The back is covered in blue Eco-felt so none of the knots and reverse stitchwork show. To learn more about my process, please visit https://etsy.com/shop/SnapdragonOriginals/about

I will wrap your purchase in tissue paper and a colorful ribbon and ship it via USPS First Class (with insurance) within 1-3 days of receiving your order.
