This glass sculpture is inspired by the practice of Metta, a meditation on loving-kindness. It begins with cultivating love towards ones self, and gradually expanding towards family, friends, strangers, difficult people, and then to all sentient beings. It is also setting an intention to share one's merits with others, and work for the benefit of all beings.

The glass is a sand cast. I initially sculpted the figure in medium relief out of clay, made a mold of that, and baked the mold with a special sand mix that solidified into a rigid sand cookie. I pressed a geometric wood shape into a different kind of sand, placed the sculptural cookie in that shape, and poured molten glass in. The hot glass was annealed in a kiln for 4 days, and I then ground and polished the glass on the edges for a clear window in from the sides.

It's about 13 inches tall, by 8" wide, by 1.75" deep. Made of clear glass, it stands upright and looks especially beautiful in the changing light of a windowsill.

It is made with the intention of bringing a calm and balanced feeling into the space it inhabits, while serving as an inspiration to wish and act for the well being of all beings.
