Description

8 1/2"w x 4"h x 3/4"d + 1"h wire for hanging.

Hand pressed and sculpted tile featuring crested bird (in Colorado, this would be a blue jay). This gregarious bird announces its entrance into my patio garden with loud and proud calls, and with its bold bright blue and dramatic plumage, is always a welcome sight.

The tile featuring the blue jay starts by pressing soft clay into a plaster mold designed and cast by me. Once the clay sets up a bit, details are refined as I add texture to the branch and berries, and patterning to the bird's feathers. Once the tile drys, it is fired in a "bisque" firing. Then layers of slip, stains, and glazes are painted on to give each tile a richly varied finish. The glazed tiles are fired again in an electric kiln, which melts and fuses the glazed finish onto the clay tile. To finish, a wire hanger is added so that the tile is ready to hang. Tiles need to be protected from wet, freezing weather, they can withstand wet, and they can freeze, but repeated cycles of being wet, and freezing, and thawing, will slowly break them down.

I got this for a friend as a thank-you gift and had it shipped directly to her. The service was super-fast, the tile arrived in perfect condition, and my friend LOVES it. This work is so gorgeous I'm going to have to make sure I don't sneak it out of my friend's house next time I visit....no, no, I wouldn't do that, but I may have to get one of my own.
