Description

Antique 1870's Chocolate Brown Silk Bustle Gown

This is a wonderful piece of history. The gown is done in two tones of brown - the jacket body is a lighter (almost a rust) color with rich chocolate brown sleeves and collar and accent piping. The skirt is opposite - the overskirt is done in the darker brown with a lighter brown underskirt. The jacket features center front etched mother of pearl button (15 buttons - top button is missing). A small watch pocket accents the front and is trimmed in dark brown trim. The collar is a small stand-up style. The sleeves are long and end with a triple tiered cuff. These tiers are sewn in place and each one is accented with a button. The jacket has dark brown piping around the dropped shoulder armscyes, along the bottom edge of the jacket and around the cuffs. The jacket is longer in the back to accent the bustle. The skirt is wonderful! The front of the skirt shows festooning drapery almost completely down the front and is done in an apron style. The bottom edge is pleated. This top portion wraps around the skirt expanding to a very full buslted back and curves upward to the waistline. This gives the skirt a bit of an asymmetrical look. The pleating follows the lines of the skirt and also continues to the waistline. The attached underskirt is the lighter brown and has wider pleating along the bottom edge. The hem protector encircles the hemline and is edged with dark brown piping. The bustle is created by a sewn in band on the inside of the overskirt which pulls the material together. The waistband has heaving gauging or pleating through the back section. The waistband does need some attention as it has come away from the skirt is some areas (see close-up photos). The gown is in very good condition for its age. There are a few dark spots on the jacket (see close-up photo) and the thin silk of the sleeves and overskirt are delicate. There is no shattering to the silk but I would recommend not trying to wear it, but adding it to your collection or displaying it. The jacket lining does have staining (I have a photo but could not add it as it was over the 10 picture limit. If you would like me to email you a photo of the lining, please let me know).

The gown is displayed on a current day dress form which measures:

Bustline = 35"
Waistline = 27" (skirt waistline is larger - approximately 29")
