What is the difference between a clover, a shamrock, and a trefoil anyway?

“Clover” is a generic term that refers to all trefoils, or any of the 300 species that belong to the Trifolium family. These plants have leaves that are separated into three leaflets, but you may find four-leaf, five-leaf or even six-leaf clovers as a genetic abnormality. “Shamrock,” on the other hand, means “little clover” and is used to refer to the white clover species or the suckling clover species. It is also the symbol of Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day.
In conclusion, shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are shamrocks.

The word clover is a common name for all plants in the Trifolium family, so clover and trefoil mean basically the same thing. However, the word shamrock means "little clover" and refers, more specifically, to only one or two clover species. So, all shamrocks are clovers (trefoils), but not all clovers (trefoils) are shamrocks! Are you confused yet?

The word "trefoil" comes from the Latin word "trifolium" meaning "three-leaved plant." St. Patrick thought the three leaves reminded him of the Trinity. In scouting, the three leaves of the trefoil represent the three parts of a promise: 1) service to God, 2) service to country, and 3) service to humanity.

This craft kit provides girls with an opportunity to shape their own clover, shamrock, or trefoil through string art. All the supplies are provided, and the pattern for the nails is already marked on the tree slice. Each kit includes: pre-marked tree slice with pre-drilled hook, nails, string, and twine. JUST ADD A HAMMER.

Your girls will get to hammer the nails into the wood (with adult supervision), wrap the string around the nails to create the shape, and add the twine to the hook at the top of the wood slice. The wood slice has a pre-drilled eye hook at the top. The included twine can be looped into the hook for easy hanging. The stringing method is completely up to the artist. You can string the nails in a pattern or randomly. Each method yields a unique result. You can string and restring as many times as you'd like!

The finished string art plaque makes a great Christmas tree ornament, but I would imagine most of your girls will want to hang it somewhere to enjoy year-round!

There is room on the back of the tree slice for a name, date, or message from the artist!

Make these nature inspired crafts at your next troop meeting or campout. Your girls will take home a lasting memory of their experiences in scouting! These kits are also great birthday gifts or Christmas gifts for the special scouts in your life!

YOU ONLY PAY SHIPPING FOR THE FIRST CRAFT KIT YOU PURCHASE. SHIPPING IS FREE FOR ALL ADDITIONAL TRUNKS YOU ADD TO THE SAME ORDER!

I come from a family of crafters. I guess crafting is in my blood! I have also gained lots of new skills from my years of teaching, scouting, and parenting.

What is the recommended age range for your craft kits?
Most of our kits are suitable for kids age 5 to 105. However, it is best to base your ordering on the skill and maturity level of your child or group of children. Some projects may be frustrating for little hands, and some may require additional adult helpers. Always keep small pieces away from children under 5 years of age to prevent accidental choking.
We don't include some supplies (like scissors and glue) with our craft kit orders because most people already have these supplies on hand. We don't want our customers to be forced to purchase supplies they already have. If there is something you need, please contact us. We'll see what we can do!

Because a number of our SWAP kits require round-nose pliers, we do currently sell these on our site. Just look in the "Scout SWAPs & More" section or search our site for "pliers."

We will continue to add special supplies as needed to make crafting as easy and fun as possible for our customers!
SWAPs are just crafts with a pin. The acronym, SWAP(s), stands for Something With A Pin or Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere. SWAPs are small, hand-made crafts that are traded between scouts.

The best SWAPs are scout-made and come with a personalized tags that identify the event, date, location and/or purpose of the SWAP. SWAPs should also include a safety pin or pin-back. Scouts pin SWAPs on hats or hand-crafted SWAP holders.
SWAPs aren’t just for trading, and they aren’t just for scouts. SWAPs make great party favors, classroom crafts, event giveaways, recognition awards, wearable pins, and decorative nametags. Adults also SWAP within art and craft groups, via pen pal swapping sites, and as part of letterboxing and geocaching. In short, anyone can SWAP!
Sure! Just send us a custom order request, and we'll create a custom order for the exact number of kits you wish to purchase.
