BookGrain Journals use a unique bookbinding called 'The Shoestring', developed exclusively for BookGrain Wooden Journals. The binding combines the better virtues of the spiral bound notebook, such as the ability to lay flat, with the aesthetics, simplicity and elegance of a regular book. These journals truly do lay flat which makes them perfect for writing on. When the journal lays flat the pages also remain in somewhat of a locked position which means they likely will not blow around in high winds : )

All BookGrain journals are refillable simply send us your journal and we will send it back to you with fresh pages! For more instructions view the Journal Refill page:

Motivated by a love for working with wood and a strong desire for simplicity and functionality, BookGrain Journals was founded in the Summer of 2013. It began with the hope of creating a new book binding, one which combined the better virtues of the spiral bound notebook, such as the ability to lay flat, with the aesthetics, simplicity and elegance of a regular book. After many failures, some flying sawdust, a bit of sanding, three drilled holes and one shoe-string later, the first BookGrain Journal was born.

BookGrain journals are handcrafted in Everett, Washington. We sincerely hope you enjoy your journal.
