This is the fifteenth studio recording by renowned Guitarist and Lutist Julian Bream. Born in Britain, Bream is widely credited with elevating the status of the guitar and lute as legitimate classical instruments. His recordings helped inspire interest in early music among artists like John Renbourne, whose repertoire contained a mix of 16th and 17th music, both classical and traditional. John Dowland was a prolific composer during the late 1500's and early 1600's creating music that was intended for the Lute. While these selections are "dances", they are restrained and sedate -- even somber.

Looking through my record collection, I am reminded that I went through a serious Dowland phase in college. This is one of my favorite examples of his compositions -- in part because of Bream's performances. About 98% of the disc is pristine and noise free. It's those pesky 2 percent -- where small scratches produce a handful of pops that are noticeable because the music is often very quiet. I doubt that it would be distracting. The cover is clean with a little wear and one seam that is starting to split. The inner sleeve is a replacement.

For me, this album was a calming influence. It's also a reminder of a much simpler time, some 400 years ago.
