Description

Published by Victor Gollancz, London;1984. 8vo. Fine/Fine. *Signed by Author*. This lovely modern First edition is in Fine condition. It is tightly bound in it’s original black cloth boards, with gold gilt lettering to the spine. There is just the slightest bumping to the board corners and cpine ends, but otherwise the boards are clean and sound and in excellent condition. Inside, there is some toning to the pages, but this is the only issue to mention, as the book really is in very Fine condition, with no damage or marks to speak of and appears to have been barely read. The book is signed on the title page, via a label affixed below the title.

The dust jacket is also in Fine condition, with just some very mild bumping to the spine ends and corners, correlating to that of the book, but apart from this the jacket is bright and clean, and in near perfect condition. It is the first state dust jacket, with just two reviews to the back (by Graham Greene and Angela Carter), as shown in photos. It is housed in a plastic cover in order to keep it in such lovely condition.

In this book, ‘based on events J. G. Ballard witnessed while interned in Shanghai during World War II, ‘Empire of the Sun’ is an extraordinary and original addition to the modern literature of war, a novel worthy to stand in the company of ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘The Naked and the Dead’. The horrors and privations of the Japanese internment camps, as seen through the eyes of a child to whom they are part of normal life, are presented unflinchingly; yet the novel is written in prose which is often lyrical and even beautiful. ‘Empire of the Sun’ is both a radical departure from J. G. Ballard’s previous fiction and the triumphant crowning of his career to date.’

Overall, this book is a very Fine example of this modern First edition. A first edition, first impression in the first state jacket in such good condition as this is, with the added bonus of the author’s signature, is very collectible indeed and would be a worthwile addition to any modern book collection.
