Description

On sale! Wonderful antique folk art box, with theorem style painting in yellow, dark blue, red, green, and black. The simple pine box is handmade and hand painted, a great piece of Americana from the early 19th century (I'd estimate circa 1830). The box is distressed but still has bright colors and wonderful details.

The front of the box is primarily yellow, bordered in a dark blue, and with three large pieces of fruit (or flowers?) surrounded by green and black leaves. The sides are similar with white backgrounds. The top has suffered more damage and is darkened, but you can still see flowers and fruit. The back is white with reddish-brown shapes that look a little like chickens.

This handmade box has ingenious wood hinges: the back piece of wood has notches sticking out of the sides, and the side pieces on the lid have holes that fit over these notches. The lid opens easily, with a bit of a squeak. The bottom and insides of the box are unpainted.

The box is held together with antique nails that have rectangular shanks, which were used from about 1800 to 1880. I believe this is from the earlier part of that period, when theorem stencils were popular. (This may have been painted freehand, but it has the look of theorem painting popular at that time.)

The box is in fair condition, with wear on the paint, darkening, and distressed surface to the wood. One of the side pieces of the lid has a split in it (see photos), but the structure of the box is in good condition otherwise.

Size: 9.75 inches wide x 5.5 inches deep x 3.5 inches tall (24.8 x 14 x 8.8 cm)
