This small handmade whip is from Western China. Made in Kashgar by the Uygurs

Small handmade whip from Western China, in the semi-autonomous area of Urumchi (Urumqi). The whip was made in the city of Kashgar (or Kashi) by the Uygurs, circa 1998.

It has a wooden handle which is hand painted and measures 13”. There is a leather braided whip measures 19”. Total length is 32”

Urumchi is an isolated out-post of the ancient Silk Road. The city once was an important transportation hub on the Silk Road, and now serves as the capital city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Living in Shanghai, China from 1997-1999 was an interesting time. There was very little English spoken by taxi drivers, shopkeepers or in local restaurants. Shopping the flea markets was always a huge adventure, as there was inevitably a lot of sign language and facial expressions as well as the use of calculators to negotiate a price.
We were able to travel around China while living in Shanghai. We visited Urumchi and Kashgar in 1998. It was amazing in how the city of Kashar hadn’t fully moved into the 20th century… there were an equal number of horse drawn carts as cars.
