Artist Statement: Susan Sorrentino

I have been an artist all of my life. I was born and raised on Miami Beach. I received my Bach. of Fine arts degree from the Univ. of Florida. in the USA. I make fine art paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor. I love photography and studied it in college before photo shop! I make wearable art to wear jewelry that are one of a kind and show stoppers!. I make mixed media objects of art that are often figurative shadow boxes. . I make objects of art using recycled things with possibilities. I love playing around with handcrafted fun objects like developing my boot covers. I have been a collector always and love vintage everything. I sell my art thru select art galleries and better specialty shops. For 28 years I sold directly to the public at juried fine art street festivals throughout the USA. In 2014 I was forced to retire from shows with a back injury. I have moved to Homestead Florida where I am enjoying the "country life" in south Florida. I now live close to my two beautiful grandsons that are keeping me active and young! One thing is for sure, an artist never really retires. I can't stop creating. I am so thankful that I have my Etsy shop where I can bring my art directly to the public again. I have been a member of etsy since 2009, but have only started Selling here since 2014. Thank You for your ongoing support.

Art to wear Jewelry:

I am told that when you wear my jewelry People will stop you and marvel at how unique it is.
Every piece of jewelry that I design is one of a kind and Art to wear. I take pride in creating each piece by hand myself. You will often find my finger prints in the actual work of art. The Techniques that I use to fabricate the jewelry is something that I have developed myself and is not shared with anyone else. This is why my art pieces look so unique. They are Bold and large yet surprisingly very light weight. The polymorph resin trim that I hand mold is non-toxic and very lightweight. Many of the components that I use, are sculpted by me and then I create a mold. I cast these pieces using hydrostone. I love to use natural stones, shells and other organic materials in many of the pieces. I hand paint and varnish every piece. I have won over 60 awards at festivals for my art to wear jewelry. I used to participate in 42 shows per year for the last 20 years. All of the shows were east of the Mississippi. From 2000 to 2014, I would spend my summers in the mountains of western N. Carolina (Asheville) and Eastern TN. Most of the time I pulled my little teardrop camper and spent much time in solitude. I love nature!

The subject matter for my art to wear jewelry began in 1989. I began to create spirit guides, guardian angels, and messengers of the spirit world that touched me. I began to cared for my elderly parents then. I often asked God about where they were going when I prayed. I felt that God whispered to me thru my art work. I also wrote 350 poems during this time. I believe the words were automatic writingsth of my parents died, I wrote less and continued to create the figurative art objects and jewelry.

Paintings:

I was a painting major in college. I studied with Hiram D. Williams at the Univ of Florida. I have exhibited my paintings in many group shows in the cities where I have lived like NYC and Miami Beach.
In 2016 when I moved to Homestead Florida from Miami Beach, I fell in love with the agricultural life and the down to earth people. I found the restored theater in the old Homestead that quickly became my go to place for entertainment. I became a spotlight artist and had my first One woman art show in Dec 2017 to Jan 2018. I had painted 52 oil paintings of the Fruits that were harvested in Homestead that first summer here. I called the show the " Homestead Harvest". Many of these oil paintings and their reproductions are offered here on Etsy. You can find my paintings on the walls at the Homestead community center, and the Capri Gallery here in town. I will continue to paint this new home that I love and sell these paintings here on Etsy.

Photography, mixed media, shadow boxes, Fun Hand crafted items:

I will continue to create. There is no stopping me really. I feel complete when creating. Thank you for enjoying my art.
