Description

Amazing antique English tea tin with colorful, fanciful scenes of Chinese life on every side. This tin litho box dates to the early 1900s (about 1920s) and is wonderfully printed in a wide palette of colors, with a yellow background and touches of gold.

The tin is shaped like a hexagon and has a different Chinese person on each side, with pagodas, flowers, trees, bridges, rivers, and mountains in the background. The characters seem to represent a happy Chinese family: father in long robes on the front, mother with a fan on one side, a teenage girl with her little brother on the other side (she reminds me of anime figures), and another brother on the back, with a stereotyped look.

The tin's lid has a magical landscape with pagoda, trees, clouds, and a bird in the sky. Intricate patterns frame the image. The lid is hinged, and inside the tin is gold. In the back in very small type above the hinge it says 6 lb container Made in England.

The tin, with its whimsical illustrations and antique look, would be a wonderful addition to a collection of Chinoiserie or object d'art for your Boho or Asian decor. It has many scratches and spots of wear, especially on the corners, plus some fading, darkening, and crackling on the printed images. The lid fits tightly, and the inside is in good condition.

Size: 5 1/2 inches tall x 4.4 inches wide x 4.4 inches deep (14 x 11.2 x 11.2 cm)
