Description

The Povolhoya Medicine Bag... (Two similar bags showing).
You don't think of butterflies in the deserts of the Southwest, but we are surrounded by their unusual beauty and brilliant colors against this harsh New Mexico landscape. This beauty is called The Queen...
The butterfly was particularly revered by the Native Peoples of the American southwest. Its dance is performed by both Navajo and Hopis. In Navajo mythology, Butterfly brings the sacred flint to the hooves of the horse. In the Hopi tradition, unmarried girls of the Butterfly Clan wore their hair in the shape of butterfly wings to advertise their availability. To Native Peoples, the butterfly is a symbol of change, joy and color. The exquisite butterfly was considered a miracle of transformation and resurrection. The Butterfly Clan is said to be related to the Badger Clan of the Hopi. A butterfly ceremony exists in a nine days' dramatic ceremony called the Owakulti, occurring biennially at Oraibe' and occasionally performed at Sichomovi.
Kachinas represent the Gods (Katsinas) of the Hopi and the Butterfly is one of them. Among the various insects, Kachinas are three of butterfly origin. These are Poli Sio Hemis Kachina (Zuni Hemis Butterfly Kachina), Poli Taka (Butterfly Man), and Poli Mana (Butterfly Girl). All three can be seen on ancient Membres pottery and tribal baskets.

Feel the power of the ancient Butterfly clan of the Hopi wearing the The Povolhoya Medicine Bag...

FAQs

The section called Gallery CUSTOM from Sold is to help customers wanting a custom-made bag to find similar bag ideas. Select one of these and I will make a CUSTOM bag for you similar to it or of the same subject matter. The bag color is of my choice but I will try to accommodate a special request. These bags cannot be duplicated, obviously, being one-of-a-kind creations. Once a custom-made order is placed there are no exchanges, new selection or return.
Earthwayspirits medicine bags are hand crafted and hand painted, one of a kind. The craftmeanship of the leather pouch is substantial. The beading is secured with polyester threat to prevent breaking. The painting, however, will not withstand misuse of any kind; stretching, scraping or exposing it to any liquids. I use a fabric paint sealant to make the paint and ink more adherant. Under normal wear and tear, earthwayspirits medicine bags should last years. Store in a dry, dark and cool place...
Allow me 8 days to create your medicine bag and then add shipping time. Please inquire through Etsy messaging if you would like to request a specific color leather or beading be used, only if available.
