Description

A pendant depicting a topographical view of Striding Edge and Red Tarn in the English Lake District.

This intricately detailed pendant is hand-crafted from the finest polymer clays with the fine detail added using alcohol inks.

The walk to the summit of Helvellyn via Striding Edge was voted No.1 in a recent television programme about the 100 top British walks - and not without reason. Striding Edge is one of those features of the Lake District which is familiar to walker and non-walker alike. I think it would be fair to say that the Striding Edge ascent of Helvellyn could be considered almost legendary. The great fell walker and writer, Alfred Wainwright, who covered all the main walks and climbs in the Lake District, described Striding Edge as "... all bare rock, a succession of jagged fangs ending in a black tower". The ridge, although certainly not for the faint-hearted is extremely popular with walkers in these beautiful mountains.

The pendant measures approximately 1.6 (4cm) inches high and 1.2 (3cm) wide and is sculpted in a bronze coloured bezel and hung on a 20 inch (51cm) bronze coloured chain and would be suitable for a man or a woman.

The pendant isn't designed as a miniature map to aid your ascent to Helvellyn. Not recommended as I don't vouch for its accuracy. It's my interpretation of Striding Edge and as such is a piece of art jewellery. The pendant would make a great gift for any lover of the Lake District or to bring back those holiday memories or for anyone who has made this ascent to the Helvellyn summit. It would also make a thoughtful gift for a birthday or other special occasion or a treat for yourself.

Every piece I create is handmade and one of a kind. I don't mass produce any of my pieces. Each item is born of something that has inspired me or straight from my own thoughts and is made with attention to detail and with a prayer that someone may like it and enjoy it. My aim is to make each and every piece unique so that you may own the only one of its kind.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like other photographs and I would be pleased to help.

FAQs

Polymer clay is soft when raw (a bit like plasticine), but once conditioned, baked and cured, it hardens and is durable.

Polymer clay does not get along well with solvents or solvent based products. Pouring nail varnish remover over your piece is not recommended ... or the contents of your car oil sump for that matter!

To clean, use a soft, dry cloth. For a more stubborn mark, wash in lukewarm water using a gentle detergent such as washing-up liquid.

Do not clean with abrasive cleaning chemicals or cloths.

My jewellery will withstand rain and other moisture, but avoid prolonged immersion in hot water.

As with all jewellery, careful handling of your polymer clay jewellery should reward you with many years of pleasure.
Most of my jewellery is subtly hand initialled and dated on the reverse or some unobtrusive place. Each piece will be boxed and posted in a way to ensure, as far as I can, that it arrives safely.

I don't gift-wrap the box itself because if it is a gift for someone and you are anything like me, you will want to check it first - even just to see how it looks 'in the flesh' ... Besides you may not appreciate my taste in gift-wrapping!

I am more than happy to gift wrap and include a personal note if you would like that and would be open to any gift-wrapping ideas you may have - at no extra cost. Just send me a conversation with what you would like and I will do all I can to meet your requirements.
Polymer clay in and of itself, needs no surface treatment or finish. However, if it has had a surface effect added, this is sealed in some way. Or varnish may be used to give a desired finish.

Renaissance Wax is a microcrystaline wax polish, developed by the British Museum in the 1950s to protect and preserve many of the items in its collection and is used on many materials including metal, wood, leather - and even oil paintings.

I use Renaissance Wax on all of my smooth finished pieces as it protects the piece from day to day dirt and fingerprints. It enhances, rather than alters and freshens colours and imparts a lovely lustre and soft sheen.

It is applied, left to dry, and buffed. I usually do this two or three times.
