Description

Vintage African Textile indigo blanket

Vintage indigo blue textile hand woven and hand-dyed by the Dogon tribe from Mali in West Africa.
These beautiful indigo textiles look fantastic hung on a wall, over a chair, or on the back of a couch. They can also be used to make pillows, as a beach blanket or even as a shawl.

★ dimensions:
roughly 40" wide x 65" long
★ condition:
very good vintage condition; some loose stitching, one hole (see pictures).
★ care:
gentle machine or hand wash in cold and hang to dry.

Each piece of vintage African indigo cloth is unique and may have imperfections. The cotton cloth is made by stitching together several hand woven strips to create one large textile. The fabric is then hand dyed with indigo, using either stitch resist or tie-dyeing techniques, to create the various patterns. These pieces were sometimes worn as wrap-around skirts and would have been repaired over and over.

I strive to find textiles with the best color, patterns, weight, and hand feel. Sometimes there may be small holes or mended areas (which I have noted under "condition" above). These imperfections show the history of each piece and add to the unique beauty and charm.
