Description

'Swimming with jellyfish' is a completely hand-made block print carved from a rubber plate and stamped on to paper. It has a blend of sea greens, blues and turquoise as well as hints of metallic gold. This is an original hand-printed art work so colours will vary with each print.

- westcoast mermaid (wearing a parka) swimming with jellyfish
- hand-printed
- limited edition of 50
- archival 100% cotton paper
- fits standard frame size

Linocut is a blockprinting technique, similar to woodcutting. A design is cut into a piece of linoleum with carving tools such as sharp knives and chisels. Ink is rolled over the carved surface and then pressed onto paper. All my prints are my original designs, hand-carved by me. I ink and print each one by hand so every print is unique!

The printed area is approximately 12″ x 9″ on 15″ x 11″ Stonehenge 100% cotton deckled archival paper, and the design is printed with Speedball block printing inks. This can be framed in a standard 11″ x 14″ frame, or 16″ x 20″ frame with a matte.

INSPIRATION: Swimming with Jellyfish – a Pacific Northwest mermaid tale:

Some time ago I was snorkeling at Cape Palmerston, on the northwest tip of Vancouver Island. I was close to shore, watching the marine plants ebb and flow with the current and observing some rockfish. Suddenly I was surrounded by a massive school of clear, tiny jellyfish. I stopped swimming and floated, dazzled by the translucent creatures drifting past. Finding myself amidst thousands of this simple, yet fascinating species that some believe have been on earth for millions of years was a humbling and breathtaking experience.

To express the wonderment of the event I chose to depict this luminous encounter using a west coast mermaid-like creature, with elements of the inuit sea goddess Sedna and the Scottish Selkie, a supernatural being with seal and human qualities. My mermaid wears a warm hooded jacket to insulate her from the cool North Pacific Ocean and I have given her gills so she can breathe underwater – a recurring dream of mine.
