Description

A beautiful Edwardian edition of "The Gateway To Chaucer Stories Told By Emily Underdown From The Canterbury Tales Of Geoffrey Chaucer". The book is undated but research shows it to date from 1910 and is published by Thomas Nelson and Sons, of London. With 16 coloured plate illustrations after Anne Anderson and numerous further marginal illustrations, (see photos). In good condition.

Uniform with this volume Nelson published "Gateway to Shakespeare" and "Gateway to Romance" and "Gateway To Tennyson", the latter of which I also have in stock at time of listing. Please note these were intended as introductions to the subject or author as opposed to high level academic texts. They make super gift editions. The tales in this volume are reinterpreted and written so that they are easier to read and understand.

In good condition for a book of 108 years old. The bright, clean pages have remarkably little tanning or foxing apart from mild tanning to the outside edge and just the odd foxing spot inside. There is a school prize book plate on the front paste down (see photos), but no other writing or signs of previous ownership. The top of the closed edges are gilt. The binding remains good and tight and there are no cracked hinges.

Contains 16 wonderful colour plate illustrations after Anne Anderson. The illustrated frontispiece has it's original tissue guard still intact (the tissue has mildly tanned). Also has detailed sepia illustrated endpapers front and back, and marginal line drawings throughout. Opens with a short biography of Chaucer.

The green cloth boards are delightful. The edges are bevelled. There is a fair amount of rubbing along the very edges and to the cloth at the corners to reveal boards beneath at the very edge. With the odd faint mark or scratch mark to the cloth on the front, including a small faded area near the author's name, but overall the bright sparkly floral gilt and titles are extremely eye catching. The rear board is plain green cloth. This has some marks and a couple of thin scratches. There is rubbing here too at the corners, else clean and bright.

The spine has faded slightly in comparison to the front and rear and there is rubbing of the cloth at the head, tail and along the hinges where it has frayed in a few small areas and there are a few small splits to the cloth. Again the floral gilt work and titles are shiny and this book looks excellent on the vintage book shelf.

Your copy of The Gateway To Chaucer will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon and sent well packaged.

H 23.5 cm x W 18.5 cm, 0.93 kg, 269 pages. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (There are just a very few countries which I am unable to ship to).
