This fabulous vintage straw hat was made in the 1960s by Mr. John, one of the glitterati among mid-century U.S. milliners. The hat is made of straw coiled around in alternating stripes of chocolate brown and black. It has a turned up brim (shorter in the back) with a grosgrain ribbon around the base that can't be seen when the brim is up. When the brim is down, the hat has a bell shape, with the brim curving slightly inward. (I don't know if anyone would wear it this way, but why is the ribbon there otherwise?)

The hat's label is Mr. John Sophisticate, New York, Paris. It is in excellent condition, with virtually no wear visible. This is really a stunningly well-made hat.

Size: 21 inches (53.3 cm) around the inside band. The crown is 5 1/2 inches tall (14 cm)

Mr. John--John Piocelle, or John P. John as he dubbed himself (also known as the Mad Hatter)--led a sophisticated life in Hollywood and produced some of today's most sought after vintage hats. He was also noted for work, before their split in 1948, as half of the John-Frederics duo, whose most famous hat was the straw and green velvet bonnet worn by Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind.
