Description

Rare live edge root burl slab coffee table of bois d'ark and custom steel legs adds panache and verve to living room, in front of fireplace, sofa, couch, bedroom or as record player stand. Take note of the organic energy emanating from this thick live edge wood slab. The warm tuscan brown colored smooth top surface contrasts with the textured live edges. The hand forged steel legs compliment the hardwood top.

The STORY -
A local couple brought a large tree root with an unusual story to the WoodSwan staging area. According to the landowners, the root was installed on their property 40 years ago as an underwater structure for an old bridge along the Rio Hondo (Hondo River) in Lincoln County, New Mexico. The flood of 2008 damaged the underpinnings of the bridge, making it unstable. The bridge needed to be dismantled and replaced. As the structural materials were removed, the couple tried to find uses for the cable, metal, and wood. They marveled at the raw root ball which had been SUBMERGED under water for as long as anyone local could remember, at least 40 years. Believing the root to be walnut, a native species, the thoughtful couple approached Sherry and G.R. at WoodSwan to explore uses for the old sentinel. In short, they struck a deal. Then began the process of drying the large burl...

The Story brings to mind the words of P.B. Shelley from, The Cloud
"I am the daughter of Earth and Water,
And the nursling of the Sky;
I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores;
I change, but I cannot die."

Of course the root was soaking wet through and through. The WoodSwan team began the arduous task of slowly and carefully drying the wood, ... for years. It was sealed all over, placed under cover and monitored.

The SURPRISE -
It was time to cut into the root ball. G.R. called Sherry back to the mill saying he was flummoxed. What Sherry saw at the first cut made her stop in her tracks. The wood was not walnut, as they had been told. The wood was not the color expected! She knew immediately that the root burl was a rare specimen.... it was the largest section of bois d'ark they had ever seen in their region! While the wood is a bright golden color when cut, the UV rays turn the wood a toasted tuscan brown over time. Highly sought, the wood is extraordinarily hard and prized for its figured grain and character. The pieces were cut, sticker stacked and prepped for drying. Next the wood was placed in our solar kiln for pre-drying, then lastly, placed in our 10,000 board foot kiln. Eight years later, it is ready to create some legacy pieces.

Imagine the state of these pieces of wood when processing began. Every crack and orifice was full of silt and sand from the flowing river water. The team spent countless hours cleaning, picking out rocks, gravel, pebbles and smoothing the live edges, cracks and occlusions releasing the true character of the wood. Note the dark shadowed effect enhancing all the edges. Maybe that coloration is due to the years under water? The pieces have been oiled, dried, sanded and oiled again (sanding between coats). Lastly, coats of food safe hard matte wax are added to complete the process.

Won't you complete the "rescue" and welcome this old sentinel into your home environment?

    My husband and I purchased our cake stand from this shop 5 years ago for our wedding, and we just purchased a stump from them for our anniversary. Both are outstanding, and I love that the wood is salvaged. The inscriptions are perfect as well. We really appreciate the care and workmanship put into our orders- we will treasure the pieces always! Thank you!

    Gorgeous, high quality and beautiful finish. One star off because the color was much yellower than it appeared in the photos - but of course hard to get accurate color on a computer screen. Carefully packaged and arrived quickly.
