Description

Being offered is a matching pair (2) of Gaudy Welsh large dinner plates in the rare "Hellter Skelter" pattern. Each of the plates measures 10 1/4" across. These are antique plates made around the year 1830, probably in England. The two plates are marked, on the back, with a hand painted crown design and the pattern number "124" under the crown. I do not have a definite answer on which pottery used this mark - it could possibly be Masons or Ridgway.

Wikipedia defines Helter Skelter as being "a funfair or amusement park ride with a slide built in a spiral around a high tower". this design is clearly evident on these antique Gaudy Welsh plates, the tower painted in a Chinese re-orange and the slide painted in a deep cobalt blue with gilt highlights. These antique pottery plates have been first printed with a red transfer print and then overpainted with red and and blue highlights in a profusion of floral designs.

This pair of British collectible plates are in very good condition. There are no chips, cracks or repairs and very little surface wear. These would make a lovely gift for anyone who admires English Cottage decor.

I have six (6) of these plates in all, which I will be listing seperately in pairs. Two of the plates have some edge damage and they will be listed for a lower price.
