Custom Rustic Nordic Neck Knife: O1 Steel, Aspen Handle

Description

This is a nice little knife made from a salvaged high performance outdoor blade.

The blade is made of O1 carbon steel, and was originally from an Enzo "Nordic" knife with a "Scandinavian grind" and a snapped tang. I ground the broken blade into a small "neck knife" size, painstakingly keeping the metal only moderately warm to the touch so as not to ruin the heat treatment. I fitted the modified blade into an aspen wood handle with a brass bolster. Following the natural grain of the wood, the blade is oriented to point slightly to the left looking at it from the top (please see the pictures). As a right-handed wood carver, I actually prefer this, but I thought you should know that the knife is not perfectly symmetrical. The blade is also oriented with a slight "trailing point" (it faces slightly up), which again, I prefer in small blades to allow finger clearance in close up work. The aspen handle is short but beefy in a traditional Scandinavian or Nordic style, and the wood grain has some nice swirls and figuring for added character. The handle is sanded smooth and oiled for a blister-free carving experience.

This is a great whittling and carving knife, and is an absolute beast at starting fires (the spine is squared and the O1 steel is hard for shaving tinder and throwing huge sparks from ferrocerium rods). This would be the perfect gift for the outdoorsy pyromaniac in your life! This ships by default as a knife only, but I am happy to make you an oiled or waxed leather sheath for an extra charge.

Dimensions:
Overall Length: Just under 7" (178 mm)
Blade Length: ~2 11/16" (~68 mm)
Blade Thickness: 0.14" (3.5 mm)
Weight: 2.6 oz (~74 g)

Wish there were 10 stars! Can't begin to describe what a terrific experience I had buying a watch from Peter for my *very picky* husband's birthday. Peter allowed me to ask as many questions as I wanted (even educated me extensively about mods), encouraged me when I wanted to make changes to the original design and then did so beautifully, quickly and with tons of updates and attention to every detail. Best buying experience ever.
Thanks Peter.
So happy to have found you!
