Description

This amazing antique folk art box is carved wax from Germany, made in the early 1900s. This is a nice example of German wax art, a traditional craft in Bavaria. Most examples of this wax art I've seen have been candles, wall plaques, or figurines, so this box is very rare.

The box has a baroque design on it, with an ornate flower motif surrounded by scrolls. There are three of these on the lid, two on the long sides, and one on each end. The box was painted with purple on the flowers, gold on the scrolls, and a dark brown background. Though much of the paint has worn away (especially the gold), the flowers are still distinctly purple.

The box, given its age and fragile material, is in pretty good condition, but it's had some damage. One corner of the lid has some cracks but has been repaired (see photos). The sides have some warping, and there are a few dents and spots where wax is missing. The lid has darkened much more than the sides, but still has some glint to it. Inside seems to be in good condition and could still be used as a trinket or keepsake box.

Size: About 6.5 inches wide x 3 inches deep x 2.5 inches tall (16.5 x 7.6 x 6.3 cm)
