Item details

This small handmade wood box from India. It measures 1 1/4 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches wide. It has room inside to store very small items.

Das is a carpenter in Jaipur. He builds homes, cabinetry and furniture. Das averages about US$1,000 a year. That’s about US$2.70 a day to make ends meet for five people. Das uses scrap wood to make boxes and trinkets to be sold to tourists and the western retail market. Many times he is not given a fair price for his work.

Each box that Das makes is a piece of art. Each one is different. Das is teaching his sons, Raj and Rhul how to make the boxes to help pay for the increasing living costs. Das lives with his wife, mother and two of his six children in the house he built himself outside Jaipur, India

Your purchase supports Das and OAWAAPI projects and journeys! We appreciate your consideration!.
