I LOVE the clock. The design is adorable, and the cuckoo is so gentle and pleasant. I was a little disappointed that there are smudges and stains on the paint, from the wood stain or varnish that was used for the numbers. It makes the clock look dirty and I don’t really think there is any way to fix it other than to re-paint it. That said, the artist/seller was very patient with my lengthy emails asking multiple questions, and he got back to me quickly. He was also nice enough to make sure the clock arrived in time for the birthday party at which I was gifting the clock to my niece, on short notice. Bottom line—she loves it and so I am very happy.

CNC Routing and CO2 Laser engraving - Whats the difference? And what does this mean to my customers?

CNC Routing is a Computer-Aided process of removing material (primarily wood in this case) to produce a unique shape or deep engraving in stock material. This process allows me to take a thick piece of stock wood and create a unique cutout. Similar to using scissors to cut out a snow flake from paper, however, I do it with wood and other materials.

The main limitation to CNC Routing is the diameter of the router bit. The smallest router bits are typically 1/16 of an inch. This works great for most cutting operations but does not allow for really fine and detailed engraving especially when you have a very intricate design to produce.

CO2 Laser Engraving is the process of etching out very fine details on a stock material (such as wood) with extremely high precision and accuracy. The laser beam allows for very fine lines and marking that are not achievable with a CNC Router. Laser engraving can produce a consistent line thickness of less than 1/100 of an inch. This allows for much greater design details vs. CNC Routing.

The main limitation to Laser engraving is the thickness of the material it can cut. Even the most expensive (and high powered) lasers can only cut through wood of about 1/8 inch thick. Whereas a CNC Router can cut through a 1 inch piece of wood without any problem.

So by combining these two different and separate processes, I can create a broad range of interesting and truly unique products not found at very many shops.
