Up to a few years ago, my kids were ALWAYS sick in the winter. Colds, flu, you name it. And if it wasn’t that my youngest was suffering with whole mouth cold sores. So, I looked into ways to naturally boost their immune systems. I researched the benefits of elderberry syrup and the immune boosting qualities were amazing. The organic elderberry syrup is a huge immune builder for our family. And no more cold sores too!

ELDERBERRY
Health benefits of the elder plant include naturally improving colds, the flu, sinus issues, nerve pain, inflammation, chronic fatigue, allergies, constipation and some have claimed, even cancer. When used within the first 48 hours of onset of symptoms, the extract has actually been found to reduce the duration of the flu with symptoms being relieved on an average of four days earlier. When it comes antioxidant power, elderberry is higher in flavonoids than blueberries, cranberries, goji berries and blackberries.

CINNAMON STICK
One of the most beneficial spices on earth, giving it antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, immunity-boosting and potential cancer and heart disease-protecting abilities.

TURMERIC ROOT
Largely due to its curcumin content, Turmeric is often credited with these benefits: Fighting inflammation. As an antioxidant. Protects the heart in various ways. Helpful for arthritis. Brain boosting. May be helpful for fighting diabetes and cancer

GINGER ROOT
In addition to fighting nausea, The health benefits of ginger are largely due to its antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and content of therapeutic compounds like gingerol, shogaol, paradol and zingerone.

WHOLE CLOVES
Cloves are anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiseptic and analgesic. They’re packed with antioxidants and are good sources of minerals (especially manganese), omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and vitamins,so it’s great in relieving upper respiratory infection.

All you need to add water to boil and we recommend adding your own local raw honey.

Instructions:
1. Pour about 6 cups water into medium saucepan and add elderberry muslin bag (do not add honey!)
2. Bring to a boil and then COVER and reduce to a simmer for about 45 minutes. At that point, remove from heat and let cool enough to be handled.
3. Discard the elderberries and other ingredients (or compost them!) and let the liquid cool to warm. Add honey to your liking (We do 1 cup of honey) and stir well.
4. When honey is well mixed into the elderberry mixture, pour the syrup into a quart sized mason jar or glass bottle of some kind.
5. That’s it! You just made homemade elderberry syrup! Store in the fridge and take regularly for its immune boosting properties. Some sources recommend taking only during the week and skip the weekends to boost immunity.
6. Standard dose is ½ tsp to 1 tsp for kids and ½ Tbsp to 1 Tbsp for adults. If the flu does strike, can take the normal dose every 2-3 hours instead until symptoms disappear.

Whatever you feel will last more than a month you can freeze. Pour into ice cube trays to bring out later or any other freezer safe container.
