  • Handmade
  • Materials: light cotton, indigo dye, thread

This past fall I was invited to create a display that "talked" about indigo at the main city library. The installation involved thirteen roughly 10 ft. x 26 in. long banners made of a light, breezy cotton – some were cotton lawn and others of voile. They were installed in the atrium where they "greeted" the patrons and caught the breeze for 3 months.

Each piece was manipulated by hand in a shibori resist pattern and hand dyed in an indigo dye vat in my home studio. Sometimes the cloth was pleated, folded again then compressed between two pieces of wood or similar object and dyed. Sometimes the manipulation involved hand stitching and binding – each banner has a different approach before being dyed. The entire process (complete project) with finishing details took 3 months.

Some of the images show the installation and the specific piece listed in that context. Others show the pieces as they were in the making.

Even though, they are all the same size, the processes differ, so the prices on each banner will be unique as well. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I came across this listing and requested a custom indigo overdye of some pale blue chinos I had... I was hoping for a hybrid between chinos/khakis and jeans. What I received was nothing short of amazing. Customer service and communication with the seller was amazing. The price and service rendered is beyond fair and the return shipping was very fast and nicely packaged. But most importantly the final product looks exactly how I imagined a custom, hand-dyed pair of pants would look, with slight color variations near seams and contrasting stitching and buttons where the dye didn't penetrate as well, lending a very rugged workwear and denim-like look. The blue color itself is amazing. I can't wait to hopefully get that indigo "fade" like jeans, and get more character with wear! HAPPY CUSTOMER.

The shirt is brilliant..better than the photograph. It is both conservative but eye catching (how can this be!) Thank you so much. Irene
