Description

Here is another stunning vintage diamond engagement ring from the famed Granat Brothers of San Francisco, one of the leading jewelers of the last century. Made in the late 1940s to early 1950s, it features a transitional cut diamond set in a classic minimalist midcentury 18k white gold band. Transitional cuts were precursors to the highly standardized round brilliant cut that we see in modern rings. They represented a move away from the chunkier look of earlier old European cuts but since their proportions were not yet standardized they are each one-of-a-kind uniquely cut gems. Personally, I love the look because it retains the aura of a bygone era. The transitional cut diamond in this ring is gorgeous, full of fire and sparkle with color of I and an estimated clarity of SI1. It measures 3.25mm or approximately .15ct and is bead-set in a rounded illusion setting which enhances its brightness and creates the appearance of a much larger stone. The 18k white gold band is a classic Granat Brothers design with beautiful raised rounded shoulders and a lily-basket undergallery creating a wonderful profile. It is hallmarked 18k and stamped Granat Bros. This engagement ring would look fantastic with one of the white gold diamond wedding bands in my shop. The photos show it with a Granat Brothers band and a wedding band by Jabel, nice 1950s rings. Ask for more photos if you are interested! This ring is in excellent condition and just back from being buffed at the jeweler, looking much as it did when it was originally sold.

The Granat Brothers opened their first jewelry store in 1905 in Stockton, California and moved their operations to San Francisco in 1922. They specialized in wedding and engagement rings and were known for amazing craftsmanship and quality. At one point they claimed to have the largest selection of diamond rings in the Western United States. In the 1950s they won the Diamond International Award for Excellence in Creative Designs for eight years in a row. In the 1960s they retired, selling their retail business to Zales.

If you find a piece in my shop that you cannot pay for right away, I will work with you on a layaway payment plan that fits your needs. You can start the process with a 25% deposit and pay the balance over 3 to 6 months. There are no interest charges or fees for layaway, but if you change your mind after you begin the process, any payments made will be converted into a store credit. Additional policies

SIZING
I offer sizing services through my jeweler who has extensive experience sizing antique rings. Many jewelers do not have the expertise to match gold color and work with antique settings, so please consider using my sizing service. Rings are usually sized in about five working days.

INSURANCE APPRAISAL
My jeweler can provide you with an insurance appraisal if you need one for a fee of $50.

A NOTE ON ANTIQUE JEWELRY
Most of the gemstone rings in my shop are vintage or antique. As such, they do not easily fit the parameters of modern definitions of carat weight, clarity and cut.

For GIA appraisals, carat weight is determined by removing a stone from its setting and measuring it individually. With vintage jewelry this could compromise the integrity of the piece. I measure gemstones in their original settings and provide those measurements and an estimate of carat weight to give you with as much information as possible.

Clarity of a gemstone was of less concern a century ago, so many of these stones have tiny flaws and inclusions that are not visible to the eye without magnification. I do my best to disclose imperfections where present and will provide you the most accurate description possible. I examine each piece with a jeweler’s loupe, test gemstones for authenticity and also acid test gold to determine metal purity. Every piece that leaves my shop is something I would be proud to wear myself.
