We just finished a bunch of new/OLD washboard cabinets. WE LOVE TO RECYCLE/REPURPOSE/UPCYCLE,THOSE WONDERFUL OLD PIECES THAT OUR PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS USED BACK IN THEIR DAY! We find them in basements, attics, garages, barns, flea markets, antique stores, auctions and estate sales. I have loved the old laundry memorabilia, for so many years.I have literally decorated entire rooms with it! Now we are old timers and we had to downsize to a smaller home where my 76 year old hubby did not have to climb stairs anymore! That move meant a GIGANTIC need to downsize! So now we are taking lots of those old washboards and making them into wall cabinets. I have 6 hanging in my present home. I COULD NEVER NOT HAVE SEVERAL ADORNING MY WALLS!! I use them for so many things;laundry items, spice cupboard, medicine cabinet, toiletries, dog meds and first aid supplies. We have transformed those old washboards into both useful and decorative household items, ones that are SUPER CONVERSATION PIECES!
This little lingerie size washboard is called "MIDGET" and it was made by the National Washboard Co. No. 442 Chicago Memphis." It has a galvanized metal scrubbing surface which is magnetic so you can use it as a memo board, too. You will receive a BONUS of an old clothespin I have made into a magnet.***NOTE****There has been a hole punched in the top where it reads,"Midget," but it does not spoil the cabinet at all. Also, you will notice in my photos that it looks like there are dribbles at the top of the scrubbing surface. They were there when I bought the washboard. I do not think they detract from the charm of the cabinet, either. This cabinet measures 18" x 8 1/2" x 5" deep. The 2 shelves inside are 7 1/8" and almost 4". I keep the washboard in its' original state and only add a coat of Minwax polycrylic for protection. Then we build a cabinet from 3/4" pine and plywood. We add a tight latch closure and a pair of antiqued silver hinges and an old wooden knob, painted red,to match the red lettering in "MIDGET." I use Minwax stain and polycrylic to finish the cabinet. We suggest hanging our cabinets by drilling 2 screws in through the back, into the wall, but with these smaller cabinets, you can use 1 sawtooth hanger in each of the upper corners in the back. We also add a towel bar at the bottom which can also be used for belts, ties, scarves, necklaces, bracelets and pet leashes. The cabinets also make SUPER gifts!
The last thing I want to make sure you know,is that we REALLY appreciate each and every sale because we only have social security to live on so we create and sell on etsy to help pay our bills! ****THANKS SO MUCH FOR LOOKING! GOD BLESS.*****
