Description

Ornate Victorian antique candle scissors were made by John Gilbert in either Birmingham or London, England, in the 1800s. This dedicated tool is designed to snip off candle wicks when they get too long. They are cup-shaped, to catch the burning wick so it doesn't fall and burn something. The cup can also be used as a candle snuffer. There are three small feet so the scissors can be set down without danger of damaging furniture.

There is a spring that keeps the scissors closed.

The ornate design features classic shell and acanthus-leaf motifs. The box part is more plain, perhaps intended to be monogrammed, if desired.

John Gilbert was in business beginning in 1812 and specialized in Sheffield silver, which involves using thin sheets of silver sandwiching a base metal, which is then fashioned into whatever item desired. (The other type of plating is electro-plating, which uses electricity to fuse a thin film of silver onto a base metal object). Gilbert was located in both Birmingham and London (not sure if it was two offices, or if he moved). I am guessing the date of these candle scissors is late Victorian, just based on the style, but before 1891, after which they would have said "England" somewhere on them.

Size: 7.5 inches long x 2 inches wide x 3/4 inch tall

Age: Late 1800s

Materials: Silver-plated base metal

Marks: "Gil / bert" mark, twice, with another mark between them that is a triangle with a cross.

Condition: Overall the plating is in very good condition. There are quite a few dings on the point and a tiny bit of plating loss at the very tip of the point, and I see one other very small loss on a corner of the box. There are a few other pinhead-size losses. Some discoloration inside the box but I didn't really try to shine that part at all.
