Abstract silver necklace pendant, sold on either an adjustable 18” chain or black silk rope

2" x 2" x 0.5"

Cast via lost wax process then hand polished to a mirror finish. This process involves making a silicone mold of the original, followed by making a series of wax copies using the silicone mold. These wax copies are then encased in something called "investment" (much like plaster of Paris). This mold is then placed in a kiln and the wax "burned out" leaving behind a negative of the original object. Molten metal (silver, bronze, etc) is then poured into the mold. Once cooled, the mold is broken and a very rough casting is obtained. This is then polished to a mirror finish via many, many grades of sand paper and polishing waxes until a mirror-finished surface emerges on the finished piece.

Trained as a scientist with a Ph.D. in Physiology & Biophysics, Dr. Spangler began sculpting stone when he moved to Pennsylvania in 1989. Small models (maquettes) for his larger sculptures were given to his three daughters as necklaces. Demand was such that he elected to go into business with his daughter Britta who now markets his work on ETSY. Dr. Spangler is now an award winning sculptor and jewelry designer.
