Celeste Holm headed a superb cast in this musical stage production that not only tackled women's issues, but presents a musical impression of the struggles of blacks against slavery traveling the Underground Railroad. Despite its serious content, the show was a comedy, and the music is bright and lively ... there is humor aplenty.

The original Bloomer Girl was, of course Amelia Jenks Bloomer of Homer, New York. The cover of the record has some interesting notes and gives a good synopsis of the play. Celeste Holm plays Evelina, a headstrong young girl who has come under the influence of Amelia Bloomer.

Her father wants her to marry and introduces a young man who, he thinks, will dissuade Evelina from her willful and new-fangled ways. But the two fall in love and the handsome young man, Jeff, played by David Brooks, helps Evelina in her endeavors, including assisting slaves to escape on the Underground Railroad.

Celeste Holm has some good songs, as do Joan McCracken and Mabel Taliaferoo. Some of hese are pretty funny ("It Was Good Enough for Grandma", "Welcome Hinges", "T'morra' T'morra'", and "Never Was Born") But, in my mind Dooley Wilson & Richard Huey steal the show with their performances of "The Eagle and Me" and "I Got a Song", respectively.

By the way ... just a note about the man who wrote the lyrics: E. Y. "Yip" Harburg .... this is the same person who wrote "We're Off to See the Wizard" for the movie production of "The Wizard of Oz", starring Judy Garland!

JACKET : Slight surface rub with record ring just discernible -- a small scratch displays on the front of the cover - a small sticker scar displays on the rear of the cover -- no splitting

LINER : Clean paper liner

DISC : Clean and bright with no scratches -- this exceptionally well-preserved record plays brightly with a minimum of extraneous noise - a few tics here and there - no skips or stops -- it does not seem to have been played much -- a real pleasure listening ....
