This doll becomes someone different when you turn her upside down.

She's 11-12" tall (about the same as one of those popular fashion-model dolls, the most famous of whose names begins with a B) but her full, draped skirt covers an alternate personality.

On one side, she's a poor, hardworking kitchen maid in a patchwork skirt, a laced-up bodice, a simple plaid cotton blouse and a green and white plaid apron. Her red yarn hair is pulled back in a braid, and she is carrying a hand-crocheted basket with...what is it under that little checked cloth cover? Fresh-baked goodies, perhaps?

Flip her over, and she's a fine lady ready to go to a party, in a satiny turquoise and white polka dot dress trimmed with white lace. Her hair is up in an elegant bun. She is wearing earrings and a necklace of pearls and gold, and carries a bouquet of lemon-yellow roses.

Topsy-turvy dolls were a "folk toy" first appearing in the 19th century. Their origins are disputed, and many different versions can be seen, including "storytelling dolls" with a different character on each side, or dolls of dual ethnicities or ages. Some people use a doll like this to express themselves. Do you feel like that hardworking girl today, the one who keeps everything together and makes things run the way they should? Or are you the princess, floating off to conquer your dreams? Which one would you like to be? Choose your mood, then prop this doll against a pillow sham or couch cushion, or stand her up on your desk, coffee table or kitchen counter. Presto--non-verbal communication!

Because of this doll's small parts (including the basket and ribbon flowers) she is not recommended as a toy for children under the age of 3 years old.
