The Great Deesis with Chosen Saints Russian Icon Print

'Deesis' is a Greek word that means "supplication" or "petition". In this icon print Our Lord is centrally located and enthroned with a group of figures surrounding Him. He sits on a wide throne and holds an open book. To His right stand the the most Holy Virgin Mary Mother of God and the archangel Michael and to his left, the archangel Gabriel and Holy Glorious Prophet John the Forerunner. Mary and John are depicted turning to Christ in humble and imploring attitude with prayerfully outstretched arms begging for the salutation of man.

The figures in the upper row as well as those kneeling at Christ's feet are various saints in prayerful poses, turning to the Savior and entreating Him to forgive our sins. These holy men are saints of the Orthodox Church. Note the small dove in the center of the upper row. The dove represents the presence of the Holy Spirit as paraclete. At the corners of the icon print are depictions of the four Evangelists.

The picture is about 8 1/4" wide x 10 1/2" tall. Printed on period paper with satin finish. The verso is blank. No markings are present. This picture came with a batch of icon prints that are marked "Printed in Greece".

The artwork will be a nice addition to your collection of devotional prints. It is ready to frame and can be mounted in a traditional way with glass and displayed in your sacred space as meditation aid. Our Lady's Mantle watermark shown on the image is not on actual print.
