Graphite and Prismacolor pencils

Maybe I'm not a spring chicken any more but the early bird has bested the night owl like morning coffee bested evening beer: I wake up sometime between four and five, make a fire against this brutal New Hampshire winter, get said coffee and settle in to draw someone's beloved critter. The drawing is usually done before it's time to get to real work.

I draw fast and am proud of it. These artworks are the results of decades of practice, and every drawing teaches me something new... and I love every lesson.

Understand that I am deeply grateful to patrons who commission me draw their pets, thank you very much for considering having me create artwork for you.

These are graphite drawings, I start with an HB pencil, sketch in the basic form with very light lights, then move to a darker pencil like a 4B or 6B to shade it, fill the the dark areas with a 9B, then use a Prismacolor black to get things as dark as possible. Honestly ink would be better but it would take extra hours that I don't have. Maybe I'll do a couple inked ones and put them up for $100 or something, but right now I'd rather stick to these faster artworks.

Once you commission me and send a good, clear, photo I generally have the artwork done within a couple days and mail it to you. You can send a bunch of photos, it helps to see the pet from different angles. It also helps if the photo is large and clear enough that I can see the individual hairs

About me:

I'm a veteran, a dad, I own a little screenprinting business called Sunny Days and I've been drawing since about the third grade. I won an art contest when I was a young kid and received accolades from family and teachers, and apparently my subconscious decided that artwork is the way to love and gratification. Or maybe it's just really enjoyable for me, I don't know. It's meditation, I suppose, or maybe an obsession. Both.
