Description

This is a handcrafted Sailor's Valentine*, painstakingly designed with ALL GENUINE, NATURAL SEASHELLS to be a one-of-a-kind gift for a loved one, a special couple, or for yourself, to enjoy for years to come!

I name each of my unique Sailors Valentines after songs -- and I've christened this one: "Song of the Sea" . (inspired by music of Amalia Rodrigues). I couldn't be more thrilled that this very Sailors Valentine was CHOSEN BY RI MONTHLY for their February 2018 Issue. Article Credit: Casey Nilsson; Photography Credit: Angel Tucker, 2018.

Sailors Valentines date back to the 1800's as a coveted Art form. This one, features some extremely rare sea specimens. Not just one, but TWO rare Quahog Pearls grace the centres of two of the shell blossoms! The mauve one (the largest) set the color palette as I gathered beach findings for "Song of the Sea". Quahogs (mercenaria mercenaria) only produce a pearl rarely, one in every 5,000 MAY have one, but most likely are very small - like the other quahog pearl in the piece. You will find it as the glossy black centre of the purple coquina shellflower.

Some of the other sea treasures of interest are (but not limited to) Oyster Pearls; Moon Snails (Polinices heros) in 4 natural colorations; pearlized Turbo Shells; a Quahog Shell (Mercenaria Mercenaria) with intriguing work by Red Boring Sponges (Cliona celata); Worm Shell (Vermicularia fargoi) with desirable separated growth pattern; Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) & Banded Tulip Shells (Fasciolaria lillium) both have natural variegation in mauve tones to compliment the Quahog Pearl! Two types of Mussel, the Atlantic Ribbed Mussel (Geukensia demissa) and the Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis); pearlized Uboniums (Ubonium Costantum); Philippine Cup Shells. More and shellblossoms galore arranged artistically inside the functional glass lidded solid wood shadowbox with clasp and sturdy hanger.

The box is in the traditional 1800's octagonal shape and features a functional framed glass lid (yes, it really opens!!) and golden hook clasp. The quality real cherry wood box measures 9" wide and 2" deep and offers a sturdy hanger on the back.

Each of my wooden cased "love tokens from the Sea" come with a complimentary Shellblossom accessory as a wearable gift (matching one of the blossoms inside your Sailor's Valentine). This free gift boxed accessory is YOUR choice of matching Shellflower pendant OR Shellflower clip. Message me with your choice!

Also complimentary with my Mermaids Baubles Sailors Valentines is a very special Storycard detailing the types of shells that I used in this specific piece, and about the romantic history behind Sailor's Valentines.

On the underside of your Sailor's Valentine will be title of the piece and the year of it's creation. Message me if you'd like me to personalize with a hand lettered Name, brief Message or Sentiment...complimentary and at no extra charge.

ABOUT SAILORS VALENTINES:*
Seashell collages, many featuring hearts & blossoms are also known as SAILOR'S VALENTINES and have a lovely historic (and romantic!) background. The origins of the Sailor's Valentine date back to the 1800's, when many were crafted by sailors, most of them from New England (where I live). Some sailors bought them while in port in Barbados. The seafarers would carry them home & give as a token of their affection to their sweethearts!
