PANAMA MOLA applique panel. Vibrant colors, very fine handwork and embroidery. Bold and beautiful.

This MOLA is called IGUANA and I purchased it from a lovely lady in Panama.

This COTTON APPLIQUE panel would make a fabulous framed picture , or sewn into a quilt, jacket, bag, or cushion.

SIZE : 14" x 18" Large size.
COST : $38.00

Panel has 2 main layers of cloth used in the worked design - green and maroon.. 12 additional colors of cloth used in the applique.

The KUNA native women of PANAMA create these COTTON APPLIQUES using exquisite needlework and brilliant colors.
Cut-work or reverse appliqué is combined with regular appliqué. Finished with fine embroidery details.

Reverse appliqué involves cutting into a background fabric to expose the color of the underneath fabric. Regular appliqué is fabric sewn on top.

The KUNA women wear the larger MOLA panels sewn onto their blouses. Note: This mola has been worn.

MOLAs are collectables, and the value depends on a number of things:
-age of the panel
-fineness of the stitches, number of fabric layers used for the cut-work
-creativity and details of the design
-if it was part of a blouse worn by a Kuna woman

A MOLA is a delightful piece of ethnic textile art that is entirely hand made.
Bright and funky!
