Those clever Japanese glassblowers – they’ve been reusing and recycling for decades. Beachcombers the world over feel appreciation for those artisans’ practical repurposing of discarded sake bottles, creating glass floats to suspend fishing nets far out in the ocean. The subtle color variation of the floats is due to the range of colors of the sake bottles.

Unfortunately for the fishermen, but fortunately for the rest of us, thousands upon thousands of these little works of art have been liberated by the forces of nature and have come to rest upon our shores. Oh, how we love those gorgeous shades of green, some with just a touch of blue!

This listing is for one pillow. Each measures 14” x 20” and offers comfortable support in the small of your back or behind your neck. Handpainted one at a time on an island in the Pacific Northwest, the commercial indoor-outdoor fabric makes them suitable for your patio or boat as well as your fine home interiors. The permanent textile colors are heat-set for stability. The insert is made of polyester fiberfill in a polypropylene casing, and is removable for laundering. The cover may be spot-cleaned with mild soap and cool water, or even hosed off. Don’t worry about the weather – these can take it.

The artist has had the pleasure of successfully treasure-hunting these coveted prizes over many years and in many locations. Long since out of production, authentic glass fishing floats can be a rare find in this century, but that doesn’t deter us from the hunt; we are lured to the shoreline by the tantalizing possibility of discovery. I attempted to depict the subject just as it appears when discovered by some lucky treasure hunter. Like me!

These make a thoughtful gift for that incurable coast-lover who is always raving about the shore. And if you haven’t experienced the thrill of finding a Japanese glass float, you can still bring their beauty and mystique into your home. Enjoy!
