Material

ambrosia maple

I carved this bowl from a cross-section of a red maple tree. The coloration in the wood is what's called ambrosia, which occurs when a certain type of beetle (commonly called an ambrosia beetle) burrows into a maple tree and introduces a certain fungus (called ambrosia fungus) into the wood. As with spalting, the fungus causes the wood to change color. Towards the center of the tree the beetle/fungus incursions become more dense, resulting in the starburst pattern when the wood is cut in cross-section, as it is here. At its best, ambrosia maple is surely one of the most spectacular forms of natural coloration in wood, and this piece shows some of the best ambrosia I've ever seen. The irregular outline of the bowl actually follows the outline of the tree trunk at that point. The bowl is fairly thick except at the rim, giving it a weighty and substantial feel that I think is appropriate to its organic shape and bold coloration.

About 10 inches in its longest and widest dimensions and 3 inches high (25 x 7 cm). Polished to a gleaming shine and given a durable food-safe finish.

Almost needless to say, the source wood of this bowl make it a unique and special item; one whose equal will rarely be seen.
