1 lb Flax, combed top, roving, spinning fiber, linen, fiber, natural color, plant fiber, vegan, bast fiber
This natural colored or unbleached flax top is ready to be spun into linen.
Flax is traditionally wet spun. This is usually done by dipping your fingers into a water bowl or dampening them with a wet sponge. This softens the plant pectins and smoothes the yarn. Once your yarn is spun and/or plied, the magic to transform it into soft drapey linen begins. The spun flax yarn is boiled to remove the remaining pectins and sugars. There are several bath recipes available online that use baking soda, washing soda, soap, or a combination of the above to boil your yarn. Experiment and see what works best for you!
Linen, which is made from flax, is one of the oldest examples of textile production. The oldest example was recently found in a cave in The Republic of Georgia that dates to approx 30,000 BC. Fine Irish linen production started around 500 AD.
The flax plant produces a blue flower, edible seeds that are also used to produce linseed oil, and a spinable fiber for textiles. This plant is grown in cooler climates in many parts of the world
