WWII Original USCG US Coast Guard Canvas Seabag Duffel Bag 36" - 1940's

This was my grandfather's USCG seabag, he was a Chief Boatswain's Mate (CBM) in the US Coast Guard during WWII. This particular seabag was from when he was on the Onondaga, a 165-foot Coast Guard Cutter. He was a USCG Coxswain (Cox) at that time, before he advanced to a CBM.

The Onondaga was stationed in Astoria, Oreg. from 1934 to 1941 before being sent to Alaskan waters during World War II. She was in Dutch Harbor during the June 1942 Japanese air attacks on the U.S. military base there but suffered no casualties. The ship was decommissioned in July 1947 and sold in December 1954.

Chief Boatswain's Mate Johnsrud served 1938-1939 in the North Atlantic against Hitler's submarine wolfpack. Later, once we were involved in the war, he served in the Pacific Theater and was in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. He served on the USS Dickman, the USS San Pedro frigate and the USCGC Onondaga cutter. He wanted to be a career Coastie, but his battle wounds and malaria put an end to that. He served 1938-1945.

This canvas seabag is in good vintage condition, there are no holes, rips or tears. There are marks and soil from use and age, see images. This is a very special piece of history.

It is made from olive drab canvas in a cylinder shape with a sewn in round bottom and open top with a circle of stitched grommets. It has a rope that goes thru the grommets for closure.

There are many USCG stamps in black, along with my grandfather's last name "J.O. Johnsrud" and "USCG Onondaga". Also presents are stamps of where he went while on the Onondaga: "HALIFAX" "TRINIDAD" CAPETOWN" "BOMBAY" "BAHIA".

Folded flat the bag is about 34 inches long and 19-1/2" inches across. Weighs about 2 pounds.
