One thing you'll see a lot of around Bali is the black and white checked fabric known as kain poleng. It's woven with black and white thread or screenprinted onto white cloth.

The woven textile also has grey squares where the warp and weft intersect, reflecting that you can not have good without evil, day without night, or black without white.

In their unique culture, the Balinese continually strive for balance between the forces of good and evil, making offerings several times a day to the the spirits of the netherword, as well as to the gods.

Unlike the rest of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation state, Hinduism is the predominant religion on Bali.

It's a “hybrid Hindu”, strongly influenced by Buddhism and animism, a belief that souls or spirits exist not only in humans but in the natural environment - plants and animals, mountains and rivers, thunder and lightning.

Mata = eye. Hitam = black.

“I took the road less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” ~ Robert Frost, American poet, 1874-1963
