Albert Shaheen was a pure genius.......
Shaheen was inspired by Hawaiian flora and fauna and combined this love with Polynesian, Asian and Middle Eastern imagery to create a synergistic fusion of tropical style with modern fashion. He is credited with creating the Hawaiian look. Alfred, who came from a Lebanese American family, had grown up in the textile business and learned from his parents. He opened his first shop, Shaheens of Honolulu, in 1948. He began by hiring seamstresses trained by his mother and started screening his own fabric designs and then he hired artists and trained them. He began with 4 machines and 6 employees while he did the fabric cutting. He initially started by producing 'Aloha Shirts' but they were different from his competitors in types of styles, and prints. He was known to send his artists to museums and libraries to research designs as well as to travel to gain knowledge of cultural ethnic designs.

Alfred developed his own large scale imagery, differentiating himself from other manufacturers by creating 24" repeats in his designs. Most of his competitors were creating "hash" prints with a 15" repeat in the design. He also created fabulous border prints which he used successfully in his garments. This set him apart from other manufactures of Hawaiian style clothing and made him the king of the Hawaiian garment industry. 1n 1950, the Korean war tied up not only money but fabric so Shaheen said "If I am going to survive in this business, I have got to control the fabric."
His textile artists created over 6,000 designs between 1948 and 1988. Shaheen said: "What I did was to make my designs more demonstrative. The first this I did was to have my artists go into the Bishop Museum and study the tapas, and look for artifacts that could be illustrated. Basically what I wanted them to do was create a textile design that had some meaning to it, to write a story about each textile design. We tried to put in more substance into the design, and on the hang tag we'd write the story behind the design." Man, what I wouldn't give for one of those hang tags, or even the dress behind it!
Alfred, ever the innovator of his time, went on to market his own in store three dimensional boutiques called 'East Meets West" in high end finer department stores; such as Bloomingdales and Bullocks, helping him to brand his line of clothing and swimwear. He eventually had 140 of these stores across the USA. Tourists and manufacturers helped to spread his clothing and prints throughout the US.

Returns and exchange details

*PLEASE SHOP WITH CARE AND ASK QUESTIONS, AS ALL SALES ARE FINAL!

*(INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS ALERT; for those of you in the European Union Countries who are used to their lenient return policy laws, please note my non-EU policy and accept my apologies.) Please read my why & wherefores below ;-)

*Since vintage/antique items are 20 years to decades old, pre-owned, usually pre-worn or used I have chosen to consider all sales final unless an item has been grossly misrepresented in my 'description': The photographs of items and any measurements given for the item or garment in the listing are considered part of the description, so review them closely.I try my very best to examine, describe and measure items accurately and to disclose any noticeable condition issue or flaw, so that you will know as exactly as possible in words and images, what you are buying. I often have extra photographs and will convo them to you if asked.
VINTAGE CONDITION CODES BELOW!

*Due to the fact all of the items are vintage, they are sold AS-IS, described in detail in the listing, though I often have repaired a seam or mended a flaw to do my best to send them to you in great shape! Items are usually dry cleaned, air and sun freshened or washed, ironed or steamed. But sometimes if the item is fragile, antique, or requires special expert cleaning I will sell it AS IS; in' Found Condition' (we have no access here in the small isolated town of La Grande to specialized cleaners) I do not know what or if any possible allergens the 'as is' clothes, hats, purses, shoes have been exposed to, (including smoke, though I NEVER buy anything on which I smell smoke!!) please consider these potential issues before purchasing vintage.

*Those of you who know and adore vintage understand that some slight wear and tear in an item reveals that it was lovingly worn and cherished by the previous owner and do not expect "perfection". Even new old / new stock items may have minor issues.

***No refunds or exchanges for buyers remorse, wrong size/ doesn't fit, color variation due to computer monitor, allergies, etc. Please read item descriptions carefully, if you have any questions please ask BEFORE purchasing and I will be glad to research and answer to the best of my ability.

LIMITED RETURN POLICY
*Should you find that, AFTER reading the above qualifying criteria, I've made a gross misrepresentation of the item, and you need to return an item for a refund, please follow these guidelines so that your return is accepted:

* 2 WAY COMMUNICATION: You have contacted me to communicate your issue regarding the item and I have confirmed the return/ refund transaction.

*Return the item within 5 business days of receipt and make sure the item is in the same condition and packaging in which it was sent.

*All shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer.

I want you to have a wonderful shopping and receiving experience, lets hope the USPS guardian angels are with us!!

Shipping policies

*If you wish to cancel an order, do it ASAP, because I often send items out the day of the order. NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS once item has been shipped.

*I ship USPS Priority Mail Domestic at least 2 times a week, excluding weekends & holidays. I will send you a confirmation convo that I have received your order and the shipping date. I then always let you know when your item has been shipped and will include the Tracking Number & Expected Delivery Date.

*I take the utmost care in packing and shipping all my vintage treasures.
I usually add a small handling charge to cover the cost of packing materials ranging from 50 cents to $2.00 which may be added to the actual shipping charge. I use both new and clean recycled boxes, envelopes & packing materials.

*Shipping charges in the listing are determined by: the size, weight and destination of the package. Items can be shipped more quickly if the buyer wishes to cover the extra shipping costs. If you wish me to ship USPS Express Mail, let me know in advance of the purchase and I will accommodate you by changing the rate.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING ;
* I happily ship to International customers using First Class (under 20 ounces) when possible or USPS Priority Mail International (6-10 working days) BUT If items are very large (box over 12" x 12" x 12" total) or heavy (over 4 lbs.), there are special USPS rules that allow things to be shipped ONLY; Priority Mail International rather than First Class and that adds greatly to the expense. (unfortunately).

*ALL SALES ARE FINAL; I do not accept returns (for more details see "Return Policy"), so for those of you in the EU who are used to their lenient return policies please note my policy and accept my apologies.

* Our local Post Mistress has told me that once the item leaves this country, there really are no tracking systems, even when using the more expensive Priority and Express Mail and every country is different as to how they handle this.

*No international package will be marked as a gift, all duties, taxes and customs charges, if any, and special rules (ex; Costume Jewelry to Spain requires Priority Mail and that means about $28.00 in shipping) are the buyers responsibility. International buyers need be aware of their own countries laws and regulations (ex; I know the customs are very high in the United Kingdom!!).

*Your Paypal address and Etsy address must match unless prior arrangements are made. Will send to a gift recipient, when notified in advance and enclose a message card.

VINTAGE CONDITION CODES: You mean it's not brand new?

NOS or New Old Stock: This means I had the best of luck to find old stock that's
been hidden away for years and the stock cannot be put
out in the store because that store no longer exists. The
item still has its original tags/item has never been worn.
If there is something amiss, I'll mention it.

MINT: And not Mint Julep. Mint is where the item is coming to
you in amazing condition. It might be new or never worn
but I cannot guarantee that. The most this item will need is
a dry cleaning before wearing since it was stored for years

NEAR NEW: Yes. It is almost new. Most likely it was worn once and
though looks brand new, it might have one thing amiss.
A button is loose, a seam is a little wonky, a rhinestone has
dulled, etc. You get the picture, right?

EXCELLENT: And it should be. This item was worn, once perhaps twice
maybe it was worn for 4 years but the lady took great care
of keeping it excellent condition. There might be a little dirt
possibly a missing belt, a few stitches, it was altered, a
rhinestone or two, heel taps will need to be replaced.
This item will need minimal attention to wear it again, it
will need a dry cleaning to perk her up again.

GOOD: She's seen better days but the party isn't out of her yet!
And that is how I see Good vintage. It will need some
attention and a little money spent on her to fix the old gal
back up, but trust me, she's gonna knock 'em dead! She'll
need some stitch work, dry cleaning, spot cleaning, repairs,
maybe some dye work on a few areas. The old gal is still
kicking so don't give up on her yet.

TLC: I have no talent or skill to help this poor thing out but I do
know others do so for a very low price, if you have the time
here is the old thing ready to be reworked, remade, used
for bits and pieces.
