The Blood Moon Pendent Necklace is an original design which I created for the Fantasy Artists of Etsy Team (FAETEAM) monthly challenge. The monthly challenge is to design a piece based on one of the folklore names given to each month's moon. This month - October - is the Blood Moon.
The pendent measures 2.25 inches tall and 2.25 inches wide. The lower edge is pierced with a series of cutouts giving it the look of lace. The copper has been oxidized, then carefully polished to bring out the curves of the forged piece.
A particularly nice feature of this piece is that I've used triple strands of black cotton cord, bound with copper wire, to suspend it. A high quality sterling silver lobster claw clasp is used for fastening. All jump rings are soldered closed to prevent loss.
The Blood Moon Pendent Necklace is discretely marked on the back with my personal touchmark - a little fish all curled up - and comes in a nice little black velveteen drawstring pouch for safe storage.
A word about the technique:
Champleve, a word which means "raised field," was most likely invented by the ancient Celts prior to the Roman invasion.
In the champleve technique, the areas to be colored are recessed into the metal. Finely ground colored glass is packed into the recessed areas, then the piece is heated to a temperature high enough to melt the glass.
The champleve work is then cleaned, and the process is repeated several times until the recessed area is completely filled. Then, the surface of the piece is ground flat, it is heated again to give the glass a smooth and shiny surface, and the finish polish is applied.
It's a complicated and time consuming procedure, but it can produce astonishingly beautiful work! The colors are just incredible!
