Description

The Way of the Tumbrils Paris During the Revolution and Today by John Elliot. This copy is a first edition published by Max Reinhardt of London in 1958. With a number of line drawn illustrations. In good condition and with the original dust wrapper which reads....

"After a century and a half the French Revolution retains its extraordinary capacity to excite horror and pity, loathing and admiration. In The Way of the Tumbrils a dozen of its most turbulent and tragic episodes are dramatically retold in an entirely new way. The very streets, houses, prisons, and churches which once echoed with the roaring crowds, the houses of the victims, and the thudding of the guillotine come alive again against the background of those same streets and houses in Paris as they are today. Charlotte Corday’s fantastic murder of Marat in his bath; Danton's famous trial and betrayal; the violent end of Robespierre, dictator of the Terror; the massacre of the priests; the long agony of Marie-Antoinette in her dungeon by the Seine-all are recreated here by the author so that the reader really seems to be in Paris during the Revolution as an eye-witness."

A tumbril was a wheeled cart used to transport victims on their way to the guillotine.

Please note the book is written in English, not French. Pages are good being bright, clean and tightly bound. There is a name on the front paste down and again opposite on the front endpaper but otherwise no other writing, marks or inscriptions. Illustrated with 24 line drawings and a hand drawn map.

The red cloth boards are in good condition having been well protected by the wrapper.

The dust jacket has also fared pretty well. It has been price clipped. There is some mild edge wear rubbing at the corners and at the head and tail of the spine leading to some small nicks and chips. The rear of the jacket has picked up some light markings. The spine has faded in comparison with the bright red of the front. Overall the jacket is good and should continue to protect the book for many more years to come.

Your copy of The Way of the Tumbrils will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon.

H 22 cm x 14.5 cm, 180 pages, 0.42 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (With the exception of a small number of countries).
