Description

Dark Brown Black Architectural Coffee Mug - Brutalist Brutalism Ceramic Pottery - Raw Clay

These mugs are made with my own mixture of clay which is a very dark, almost black color. They hold approximately 11 - 12oz when filled to the top, but with each one being handmade, the size and shape will vary somewhat. Please let me know in the comments section if you prefer a larger or smaller mug and I will try to select one for you accordingly. They are lined with a translucent opalescent glaze on the interior which has a milky bluish tint. They are fired to cone 6 (2200°F) and are completely food safe, dishwasher safe, and microwave safe, though I generally don't recommend microwaving any ceramics you care about, and I cannot guarantee against problems caused by microwaves. The unglazed exterior is fully vitrified and will not stain or absorb water.

My inspiration for these comes largely from industrial engeneering and brutalist architecture, which utilizes angular geometry, hard lines, and concrete construction. I make each mug by hand using the potters wheel and the handles are constructed by hand.

I treat all of my unglazed surfaces with mineral oil. In addition to giving a rich satin finish to the raw clay, it seals the clay surface, helps water bead and roll off, and prevents greasy fingerprints. While it isn’t necessary to apply oil in the future, if the surface starts looking dry or splotchy from oily fingerprints, and you wish to restore the richness of the color, oil the exterior with mineral oil intended for wood cutting boards rather than cooking oils such as olive or vegetable oil, which go rancid over time. Apply the oil generously, let it soak for a few minutes or overnight, and wash as you normally would.

I am open to custom requests at my discretion.

If I have any in stock when you make your purchase I will ship the same week. Otherwise production time will usually be within 3 weeks depending on my kiln firing schedule.
