Pit firing pottery is an exciting experience. Bisque fired pots are loaded into a pit dug into the ground, and then surrounded with sawdust and various other materials. Cat food, dog food, cooper carbonate, salt and dried leaves and flowers. These materials burn at different rates and emit individual gases to produce the effects on the pots. Lastly, a fire is built on the top of the pit and left to smolder for hours, between 5 – 10 depending on the size of the load and the wood used for the fire. Pine burns fast and hot, while oak and other hard woods will produce a longer, slower burn. The next morning, the pit is unloaded and the excitement begins!

This piece has flashes of red and black around the pot, both inside and out. It measures 5 ½ x 6, and is only for decorative purposes. This firing technique does not seal the clay so the piece is not safe for food or liquid, they are for decorative purposes only.
